Times-Union-Media.-2017

The Florida Times-Union is introducing a new quarterly magazine on Downtown in June titled “J.”  As part of this project,  the editorial page staff is compiling a group of readers in an Email Group for Downtown.  These readers will be asked questions that relate to Downtown.  There is no obligation, just a chance to sound off on Downtown issues.  If you would like to join the group, please email Editorial Page Editor Mike Clark: mike.clark@jacksonville.com.  He will send you a questionnaire.  The editorial page also will be making Downtown one of its focus issues for the daily Opinion pages.  The Times-Union thanks you for your consideration.

Every Memorial Day weekend, dozens of jazz artists and thousands of fans and spectators from our hometown and from around the world travel to Jacksonville for the Jacksonville Jazz Festival. The festival is a celebration of epic proportions to honor of the music, art and culture of America’s music. The festival is unique because of its proximity to water, historically being centered around the St. John’s River, and its affordability… it’s one of few FREE large festivals! In 2017, the festival makes its way back to the core, returning to #DTJax like never before with great food, drinks, good fun and a TON of free live entertainment. The festival boasts three outdoor stages with state of the art light and sound spread across a walkable, open container footprint covering 15 city blocks! Expect exciting new additions to this year’s festival program like the Jazz Marketplace where artists and makers showcase their original wares in a unique shopping experience and Jazz Eats and Drinks, a consolidated strip full of the city’s best al fresco dining options, along with ever popular signature events such as the Piano Competition, Jazz Jam, Omni Sacred Jazz Brunch and more.

Experience

18519875_1462365870505216_4971591784721455780_nJacksonville Jazz Festival is free and open to the public, all you have to do is show up! The festival experience is enjoyable with plenty of food and drink options within 15 blocks of open container footprint, allowing you to sip and walk from one end of the festival to the other without hassle, plenty of restrooms, and the option to stand and dance or bring a lawn chair to relax in. The festival is totally yours to enjoy however you like!

Feeling fancy? Upgrade! 3-Day and single-day VIP passes are available for purchase online. These VIP passes give you some pretty sought-after luxuries that are not available to all festival goers: up-front exclusive seating, reserved parking, complimentary Coca-Cola products and snacks, air-conditioned restrooms, dedicated VIP bars, official merchandise and admission to the Jacksonville Jazz Piano Competition. VIP passes are a hot commodity and are almost gone. If you’re interested in purchasing one, you can get ‘em here.

5One week from today, a new era of live music and entertainment begins in #DTJax. Daily’s Place will host its first performance Saturday, May 27 and has a schedule stacked full of big names like Train, Dave Matthews Band, Third Eye Blind, Dierks Bentley, Meek Mill and dozens more just in the few upcoming months.

Whether you’re a Downtown native or will be visiting for a show, make sure you’re prepared! We’ve put together a guide to help in making your transportation, parking and after-party plans.

Transportation:

Don’t want to deal with parking? Can’t decide on a designated driver? Catch a ride in! Whether you want to arrive in style, on a budget or even by water, #DTJax has you covered:

  • Convenience is key to having a carefree night out. When it comes to transportation, it really doesn’t get more convenient than Uber and Lyft. Simply download the app, set your location and request a ride. New riders often get discounts so if you have never used Uber or Lyft, now is a great time to give it a go!
  • If calling up a cab is more your style, give Checker Cab a call  (904) 345-3333
  • If you’re feeling fancy, don’t want to rely on the availability of cabs or run the risk of a price surge, Jax Black Car Executive Transportation is your best bet. Your night out is in good hands with Jax Black Car; safety, reliability and superior service are what they’re known for. You’ll be picked up at your reserved time and arrive in style. Make your reservation online.
  • Make the night more adventurous – arrive by water! St. Johns River Taxi drops off at Metro Park Marina which is walking distance to Daily’s Place. For more details, visit the website.

Parking:

A common issue with large venues is the lack of parking. However, being located in the Sports Complex, there is no shortage of parking at Daily’s Place! Here are a few important bits of info about the parking:

  • Unless otherwise indicated, the price of parking at Daily’s Place is included with your ticket.
  • Premium parking is located on the east side of Daily’s Place in Lot D and requires a hang tag.  Guests who park in premium parking lots should enter through Gate 4. All other parking lots are on the west side of Daily’s Place and those guests should enter through Gate 1.  Parking lots open three hours prior to the scheduled event start time.  Parking lot times are subject to change. By parking in a Daily’s Place lot, you agree to be bound by all applicable parking lot terms and conditions.

Download the parking map here.

After-partying:

If you’ve never explored nightlife in #DTJax, you’re in for a treat! With dozens of restaurant, bars and clubs, there is something for everyone. Whatever you’re looking for, you can find it in our directory.
