It all began Saturday, Oct. 24, 1981. At the time, Mayor Jake Godbold was looking to bring the Jacksonville community together through music, specifically a genre with a strong, established culture. With organizers only expecting a few hundred people to attend, nearly 25,000 people showed up to see what the inaugural Jacksonville Jazz Festival had in store. Now, in its 35th year, the Jacksonville Jazz Festival is one of the largest, free jazz festivals in the nation.
FESTIVAL INFO
This year, free performances take place in three areas during main festival hours:
- Swingin’ Stage Bay Street @ Marsh Street
- Groovin’ Stage Bay Street @ Newnan Street
- Breezin’ Stage The Jacksonville Landing
Along with these spots, the festival also incorporates additional venues, including the Florida Theatre, Hemming Park, the Omni and Downtown nightlife venues. Special events within the festival include: Jacksonville Jazz Piano Competition, Jacksonville Jazz Festival Music Clinic, Off Jazz Concert with Fantasia, Pulse in the Park, Sunday Jazz Brunch and, of course, Jazz Fest After Dark.

After you enjoy some jazz on the festival main stages, Downtown’s entertainment district keeps the party going late night with Jazz Fest After Dark. #JFADJax brings you cool nights, hot jazz music, and of course a great time – for FREE! Following the last act of the festival each night, enjoy even more live jazz at participating Downtown bars and clubs until each venue closes. You can view the performance schedule here. Downtown Jazz Fest After Dark venues are: 1904 Music Hall, Burro Bar, Chamblin’s Uptown, Downtown Cigar Lounge, The Hourglass Pub, Underbelly and The Volstead. Plus, you don’t want to miss the Armada CW17 Watch Party at the Laura Street Trio.
