MOCA JACKSONVILLE 333 N LAURA ST, JACKSONVILLE, FL 32202
Movies On The House at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOTH @ MOCA) Presents:
Art Walking, Sleepwalking: Tsai Ming-liang’s No No Sleep with UNF Film Professor Nicholas de Villiers  ”

For the Wednesday, October 5th Art Walk, join us in the MOCA auditorium at 7 p.m. for a screening of Taiwan filmmaker Tsai Ming-liang’s No No Sleep (2015, runtime 34 minutes) introduced by UNF Film Professor Nicholas de Villiers and followed by a discussion.  No No Sleep is one of Tsai’s “post-retirement” films in the “Walker” series of international site-specific collaborations with his muse Lee Kang-sheng walking at a snail’s pace, based on the 16thcentury Chinese story of the Tang dynasty Buddhist monk Xuanzang’s legendary pilgrimage to India. No No Sleep was filmed in Tokyo, Japan, co-starring Japanese actor Ando Masanobu, on JR line trains and walkways and in a capsule hotel and sauna (film includes brief non-sexual full-frontal male nudity). Professor de Villiers will frame the film in terms of motifs of homoeroticism, cruisy rented spaces, and sleepy affects that pervade Tsai’s body of work. Relax while watching this meditative film and learn more about award-winning Taiwan filmmaker Tsai Ming-liang (first director ever commissioned to make a film for the Louvre Museum) and Dr. de Villiers’s new book Cruisy, Sleepy, Melancholy: Sexual Disorientation in the Films of Tsai Ming-liang (published by the University of Minnesota Press; books will be available for purchase at the event).

Event details: 7-8 p.m. in the MOCA auditorium. Free admission.
