Duval Comic and Zine Fest (DCAZ)

About

DCAZ is here! Duval Comic and Zine Fest celebrates self-published media such as mini-comics, small press, alternative press, underground art and DIY media by hosting at least 50 self-published authors and artists. The event will also include a number of workshops related to zine-making and self-publishing.

Duval Comic and Zine Fest is here at last! From 12pm to 5pm, visit the downtown Main Library at the main Laura St entrance to see over 50 local zinesters bring their sometimes eclectic, often bizarre, and infectiously colorful zine art right to the very heart of Jacksonville.

But that’s not all, of course! Activities and stuff galore! Come and draw a jam comic with some friends new and old. Get your very own zine made with a very rare and very awesome risograph press. Win a drawing contest. Though remember, it’s not about winning. It’s about making your comic/zine as imaginative as possible!

Eisner Award-winning cartoonist and illustrator, Jim Rugg, will be here at 3:30pm to explore his career in the vast and wild world of zines and comics. Famous for The P.L.A.I.N. Janes, Street Angel, and the recent Hulk: Grand Design retrospective, Rugg has dipped into a variety of arenas, from the small to the massive, in the world of illustration.

We also have two local talents, Emma Jenson and Kiana Blaylock. Emma has been an integral leader and artist through Gainesville’s Sequential Arts Workshop, and Kiana’s expressive and eclectic work in a socially-aware and politically-charged environment has made her a major staple in the Jacksonville art scene.

Finally, Dan Whaley and Lindsay Anderson of DCAZ will be on-site, all day, to showcase exactly what zines and comics are all about.

So what is a zine? What is a comic? Does anyone know the answer, really?
